Great question! Owning a horse is a lot of responsibility. I rode for 5 years before getting one of my own, and I would suggest perhaps leasing before buying so you get an idea of time management. Finances are also a big issue; you have to consider board, training, feed, supplement, shoeing and veterinary costs on top of how much the horse itself costs!

That said, it’s 100% worth it if you love the sport. If you’re busy with work or school, you can always pay a trainer to ride your horse on the days you can’t make it to the barn, but I personally ride mine myself 5-6 times a week (he always gets a day or two off depending on workload). I also take two lessons a week - one flat and one jumping. I try to trail ride once a week too just to keep him fit on the hills and keep his mind fresh!

Horses are big creatures with lots of quirks, and I suggest knowing the basics of nutrition, first-aid and care. I take care of getting him shod and having the vet see him, grooming (including clipping, mane pulling, bathing, etc.), his feed and of course his training schedule. It’s also fairly easy to find a barn that will take care of all this for you. Most barns (mine included) muck out the stalls, feed the horses, turn them out, and take blankets on and off.

Those thinking about owning a horse should be prepared to devote at least three days a week to riding - and spending 2-3 hours at the barn. It’s an incredible sport and I never ever regret going to the barn, even on my busiest days.

Hope that helps a bit…it’s a big undertaking but horses give you 200% back :) Let me know if you have any other questions!
